Insurance Benefits for Nutritional and Physical Activity Services

Measurement Period: 2017
The target is met if the state develops policy for medical insurance to reimburse nutritional and physical activity services for adults with a BMI of 30 or higher.

Why is this important?

Strategic investments in disease prevention can result in significant savings in health care costs. A $10 per person per year investment in community-based programs to increase physical activity, improve nutrition and prevent smoking could save the country more than $16 billion annually within five years—a return of $5.60 for every $1 spent. Although 63% of companies that offer health benefits also offer at least one wellness program, a large proportion of individuals are not insured through work.  Federal guidelines permit, but do not require, states to cover obesity treatment under Medicaid.  Therefore, policies to promote coverage for nutrition and physical activity are needed to fill the current gap and increase coverage for services for all adults at risk for chronic diseases.
