This indicator shows the percent of children aged 0 to 5 years whose parents report that someone in their family read to the child every day in the past week.
Why is this important?
There are many benefits to reading to young children. It improves their language development, which is a strong predictor of school success, and expands their vocabulary. Children learn from the books they read, exposing them to new concepts and ideas. Most experts agree, children who have been read to are better prepared for school. Beyond these benefits, when parents read to their children, they are strengthening the social and emotional bond between parent and child.
