Certified Health and Physical Education Teachers

Measurement Period: 2017
The target is met if the state adopts policies requiring secondary health and physical education teachers to be certified to teach in their respective areas.

Why is this important?

Physical and health education are planned instructional programs with specific objectives. The teaching of PE, health and safety is complex and dynamic. Those who teach these curricula should have previous specialized education in the content; training in teaching methodologies that research has shown to be effective; proficiency in delivering skills-based instruction; effectiveness in achieving behavioral change; and communication skills to work effectively with administrators, other teachers, students, families, and community representatives. The majority of states require that physical and health education teachers have some sort of licensure or certification.
