Monitoring System to Assess Health and Physical Education Content and Performance in Schools

Measurement Period: 2017
The target is met if the state develops a monitoring system that assesses health and physical education performance standards in elementary, middle, and high schools.

Why is this important?

Frequent and routine assessment of children’s academic performance is important for identifying and addressing gaps in education.  Routine assessment of children’s language, art, or mathematics skills, for example, is critical for identifying particular children to target for additional interventions; schools to offer additional support; or states to provide more funding.  Similarly, routine assessment of health and physical education content and performance is also needed in schools.  Identifying gaps in achievement can help target efforts and support obesity prevention efforts.
