Health and Physical Education Requirements in Grades 6 to 8

Measurement Period: 2017
This target is met if the state requires health and physical education courses in grades 6 to 8.

Why is this important?

Schools play a critical role in improving the dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents. National recommendations for healthy nutrition, health education and physical activity form the cornerstone of the Hawaii State Wellness Guidelines, implemented into law in 2009.  However, the guidelines pertaining to health and physical education are only applicable to grades in public school where these classes are required. Making health and physical education a requirement for all grades will ensure continuity, and maximize the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and experiences that students gain in school for lifelong healthy eating and physical activity.
