This indicator shows the percent of public school students in grades 9-12 who did not go to school because they felt they would be unsafe at school or on their way to or from school on 1 or more times in the past 30 days.
Why is this important?
Safe schools promote the protection of all students from violence, exposure to weapons and threats, theft, bullying and harassment, the sale or use of illegal substances on school grounds, and other emergencies. Emotional and physical safety in school are related to academic performance. Students who are victims of physical or emotional harassment or involved in the sale or use of illegal substances on school grounds are at risk for poor attendance, course failure, and school dropout.
