High Risk Adults Prescribed Statins for Cardiovascular Disease

Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the percent of adults ages 21+ at high risk for a cardiovascular event who were prescribed a statin or who were on statin therapy. High risk includes adults with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, high LDL cholesterol (>=190 mg/dl), hypercholesterolemia, or diabetes.

Why is this important?

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the US. People with high cholesterol and diabetes are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Statins are a class of drugs that lower blood cholesterol and are recommended by the US Preventive Services Task Force for adults with 1 or more risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
