Cancer Survivors Who Have Obesity

State: Hawaii
Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the percent of adult cancer survivors who have obesity according to their Body Mass Index (BMI). The BMI is calculated by taking a person's weight and dividing it by their height squared in metric units (BMI = Weight (Kg)/[Height (m) ^ 2]). A BMI >=30 is considered obese.

Why is this important?

Overweight and obesity are associated with at least 13 types of cancer. Additionally, they may negatively affect cancer treatment and survival. Maintaining a healthy body weight can lower the risk for having cancer recur or developing a new cancer. It also lowers the risk for comorbid illnesses including diabetes or heart disease. Healthy nutrition and physical activity are important parts of the cancer survivorship care plan.
