This indicator shows the number of practicing dental hygienists per 100,000 population.
Why is this important?
Dental hygienists comprise a substantial and critical part of the dental profession. Dental hygienists work in a variety of settings to promote optimal oral health. Hygienists review patients' dental and health history, screen for tooth decay and gum disease, take x-rays, conduct dental cleanings, apply preventive care, provide patient education, and more. There is currently a shortage of practicing dental hygienists in the United States which has been exacerbated by the pandemic. Training and retaining hygienists is a key component of good population oral health.
