This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate due to drugs (ICD-10 codes X40-X44, X60-X64, X85, Y10-Y14).
Why is this important?
Drug overdose deaths are the leading cause of unintentional injury death in the United States. They are a major contributor to premature death and are largely preventable. The death rate due to drug overdose has been increasing over the last two decades, with over 70% of those deaths involving an opioid. Drug overdose deaths may be accidental, intentional, or of undetermined intent. This is a Healthy People 2030 Leading Health Indicator.
