This indicator shows the age-adjusted number of emergency department visits for nonfatal injuries due to intentional self-harm per 100,000 people.
Why is this important?
Every year, an increasing number of people are treated in the emergency department because they hurt themselves on purpose. Intentional self-harm is a serious public health issue that can have lasting harmful effects on individuals, families, and communities. Although this behavior is seen across all demographics, it is seen more often in adolescents, people with a history of abuse, and individuals with co-existing mental health or substance abuse problems. While not all self-harming behavior is indicative of suicidality, self-harm injuries are a key risk factor for suicide. Promoting connectedness, teaching coping and problem-solving skills, and strengthening economic supports and access to suicide care are examples of strategies that can help prevent injuries from intentional self-harm.
