Cigarette Smoking among Adults with Depression

This indicator shows the percent of adults who have ever been diagnosed with depression, and have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their life and now smokes some days or every day.

Why is this important?

Approximately 25% of U.S. adults have a behavioral health condition and account for nearly 40% of all cigarettes smoked in the nation. The leading causes of death among those with behavioral health conditions are tobacco related. The Hawaiʻi Tobacco Prevention & Control Plan 2030 focuses on advancing health equity to achieve optimal health among all persons by addressing the disproportionate impact of tobacco use and nicotine addiction on those with behavioral health conditions.
