This indicator shows the percent of lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender adults aged 18 years and over who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their life and who report smoking some days or every day.
Why is this important?
Higher rates of cigarette smoking in the LGBT community may be a result of increased stress associated with societal discrimination and marginalization, as well as frequent patronage of bars and clubs and higher rates of alcohol and drug use. The Hawaiʻi Tobacco Prevention & Control Plan 2030 focuses on advancing health equity to achieve optimal health among all persons by addressing the disproportionate impact of tobacco use and nicotine addiction among sexual and gender minority groups.
