Adults Exposed to Secondhand Smoke in a Car

Select a County
Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the percent of adults who were exposed to secondhand smoke in a car or other vehicle in the past 7 days.

Why is this important?

In Hawai‘i, smoking and vaping are prohibited in vehicles whenever a minor is present; however, cars may still be a significant source of secondhand smoke exposure for adults. Secondhand smoke can cause heart disease, stroke, and lung cancer, even in nonsmokers. Although secondhand smoke exposure has declined in recent decades, it remains high especially among certain ethnic groups and residents with low socioeconomic status. Eliminating smoking in enclosed spaces is the only way to fully protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke
