Young Teen Smokers Who Think Secondhand Smoke is Harmful

This indicator shows the percentage of public school students in grades 6-8 who smoke and who believe that breathing smoke from other people's cigarettes or other tobacco products is somewhat or very harmful to one's health.

Why is this important?

There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke causes heart disease and lung cancer in adults and a number of health problems in infants and children, including severe asthma attacks, respiratory infections, ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Although there are a growing number of laws banning smoking in workplaces and public areas, exposure to secondhand smoke remains high, especially among children. In 2007-2008, an estimated 54% of children aged 3 to 11 years were exposed to secondhand smoke. Eliminating smoking in indoor spaces is the only way to fully protect nonsmokers from secondhand smoke exposure.
