Young Teens Who Got Cigarettes without Buying Them

Measurement Period: 2017
This indicator shows the percentage of public school students in grades 6-8 who smoke cigarettes and report having gotten cigarettes through any of the following sources:

*  Gave someone else money to buy for them.
*  Borrowed/bummed them from someone else.
*  Given to them by someone.
*  Stole from a store or family member.
*  Some other way besides purchasing them.

Why is this important?

In spite of laws prohibiting the sale of tobacco products to minors, many youth are still able to obtain them.  Preventing tobacco use among young people is especially important as tobacco use is most often initiated and established during adolescence. More than 80% of adult smokers began using tobacco before the age of 18 years. Preventing youth from obtaining tobacco products can reduce smoking initiation rates, thereby reducing tobacco use in the entire population.
