Wellness Guidelines for Early Childhood

Measurement Period: 2017
The target is met if the state develops wellness guidelines for early childhood.

Why is this important?

Approximately 28% of 4-5 year old children entering Kindergarten in Hawaii are already overweight or obese, suggesting a strong need for early childhood intervention for effective obesity prevention.  The CDC and Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommend a nutrition standards policy consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans for all foods provided during the school day.  In addition, providing standards-based physical education in school settings is a strongly recommended CDC Community Guide strategy.  Developing Early Childhood Wellness Guidelines that are based on national recommendations is an important first step in building a healthier generation that receives appropriate nutrition and adequate physical activity.
