Kidney Failure Among People with Diabetes

Measurement Period: 2020
This indicator shows the rate of newly diagnosed end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients with diabetes per 1,000,000 population adjusted for age, sex and race.

Why is this important?

Diabetes is the most common cause of kidney failure, or end stage renal disease (ESRD).  This happens when the kidneys are no longer able to remove waste from the body.  At this point, dialysis or kidney transplant is necessary for survival, making ESRD a very costly condition to treat.  Preventing the onset of diabetes reduces the risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD), the precursor to ESRD.  In people with CKD and diabetes, proper control of the diabetes slows disease progression to ESRD.  The most efficient way to reduce the burden of CKD and ESRD is to prevent and treat its risk factors.  Maintaining an active lifestyle and a healthy body weight reduces the risk of developing diabetes and subsequent kidney disease.
