This indicator shows the percent of adults who, before they were 18 years old, experienced 4 or more adverse childhood experiences (ACEs). ACEs include emotional abuse; physical abuse; living with an adult who abused alcohol or drugs; having parents who were separated or divorced; living with parents who were violent with each other; living with an adult with mental illness; incarceration of a household member; and sexual abuse.
Why is this important?
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years) and include factors that can undermine a child's sense of safety, stability and bonding. ACEs are linked to chronic health problems, mental illness, and substance use problems in adolescence and adulthood. ACEs can also negatively impact education, job opportunities, and earning potential. Creating and sustaining stable, nurturing relationships and environments for all children and families can prevent ACEs and help all people reach their full potential.
