Teens with Recent Depression

State: Hawaii
Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the percent of public school students in grades 9-12 who have felt so sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more in the row that they stopped doing some usual activities in the past 12 months.

Why is this important?

Feeling sad or hopeless most of the time for two weeks or more to the point where a person stops doing usual activities can be a sign of depression. It is fairly common among teens nationally, with about 37% of high school students (47% of girls and 27% of boys) feeling this way in the past 12 months. Talking to a trusted adult or health care professional, spending time with friends and family, and self-care like eating healthy, staying physically active, and getting enough sleep can help assess the situation and improve health.
