Why is this important?

Oral health impacts overall health and well-being. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third of all adults in the United States have untreated tooth decay, or tooth caries. Both the severity and prevalence of periodontal disease increase with age. Periodontal disease and tooth decay are the most frequent causes of tooth loss. Tooth loss can cause difficulties with talking and eating. Although complete tooth loss is less common than it used to be, disparities by age, race/ethnicity, education and income remain. Strategies to prevent gum disease and tooth decay can help prevent tooth loss.
