Cigarette Smoking among Adults Who Drink Excessively

State: Hawaii
Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the percent of adults who are heavy drinkers or binge drinkers, and have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their life and now smoke some days or every day.  Heavy drinking is defined as more than two drinks a day for men and more than one drink a day for women. Binge drinking is defined as have 5 or more drinks at one time in the past 30 days among men and 4 or more drinks among women.

Why is this important?

Tobacco use and increased alcohol consumption are closely linked behaviors that often exacerbate the dependence of each other. Research shows that treating tobacco and substance use concurrently may improve long-term sobriety. The Hawaiʻi Tobacco Prevention & Control Plan 2030 focuses on advancing health equity to achieve optimal health among all persons by addressing the disproportionate impact of tobacco use, nicotine addiction, and alcohol consumption.
