LGB Teens Who Use Illicit Drugs

County: Honolulu
Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the percent of lesbian, gay, or bisexual adolescents in grades 9-12 who have ever used illicit drugs.

Why is this important?

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) teens often face social stigma and discrimination not encountered by those who identify as heterosexual. They also have a greater risk of harassment and violence. As a result of these stressors, LGB youth are at increased risk for various behavioral health issues, including illicit drug use. Substance use and abuse can increase the risk for injuries, violence, HIV infection, and overdose. Moreover, alcohol and drug use in adolescence is a predictor of substance use behavior and disorders for the lifespan.
