This indicator shows the age-adjusted hepatitis B involved death rate (with ICD-10 codes B16, B17.0, B18.0, B18.1) per 100,000 people.
Why is this important?
Hepatitis B is a vaccine-preventable liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus. Although hepatitis B is usually a short-term illness, it can develop into a chronic infection that can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer. Risk for chronic infection is related to the age of infection, where 90% of infants with hepatitis B develop a chronic infection versus only 2-6% of adults with hepatitis B. Testing people at high risk for hepatitis B and making sure people with the disease are referred for care can help reduce related deaths.
