This indicator shows the age-adjusted death rate due to diseases of the heart (ICD-10 codes I00-I09, I11, I13, I20-I51).
Why is this important?
Diseases of the heart include rheumatic heart disease, hypertensive heart or heart and renal disease, ischemic heart disease, coronary heart disease, heart attack, heart failure and other circulatory disorders. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is the cause of 1 in every 4 deaths. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and smoking are key risk factors for heart disease. Having diabetes or overweight and obesity, eating an unhealthy diet, not getting enough physical activity, and excessive alcohol use all increase a person's risk of heart disease.
