Anxiety Disorder-Related Hospitalization Rate

Select a Primary Care Service Area
This indicator shows the number of hospitalizations with an anxiety disorder ICD-10 code as a principal or secondary diagnosis among residents aged 5 years older per 10,000 residents of the same age. (Based on CCS category 651.)

Why is this important?

Anxiety disorders involve worries of fears that do not go away and can worsen over time. They can range from generalized anxiety disorder, to panic disorder, phobia-related disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, and post traumatic stress disorder. They are the most common mental disorder in the U.S. affecting over 40 million adults. People with anxiety disorder are 3 to 5 times more likely to go to the doctor and 6 times more likely to be hospitalized for psychiatric disorders than those without anxiety disorders. While anxiety disorders are highly treatable, less than 40% of people with an anxiety disorder receive treatment.
