Schizophrenia Disorder-Related Hospitalization Rate

Select a County
This indicator shows the number of hospitalizations with a schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder ICD-10 code as a principal or secondary diagnosis among residents aged 5 years older per 10,000 residents of the same age. (Based on CCS category 659.)

Why is this important?

Schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders are one of most common mental disorder-related hospital diagnoses. People with schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders lose contact with reality and experience a range of extreme symptoms which can include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking and/or grossly disorganized or abnormal behavior. Despite its relatively low population prevalence (less than 1%) it is associated with significant, health, social and economic concerns. Schizophrenia is a significant cause of disability and premature mortality (over 28 years of potential life lost on average). Early detection and appropriate treatment of the disorder and co-occurring conditions can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the risk of hospitalization and premature death.
