Delirium/Dementia Disorder-Related Hospitalization Rate

Select a Primary Care Service Area
This indicator shows the number of hospitalizations with a delirium, dementia, or amnestic and other cognitive disorder ICD-10 code as a principal or secondary diagnosis among people aged 5 years older per 10,000 people of the same age. (Based on CCS category 653.)

Why is this important?

Dementia is not a specific disease but is rather a general term for impaired ability to remember, think or make decisions that interferes with doing everyday activities; hence, it can impact a person's ability to live independently. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia. Although dementia mostly affects older adults, it is not a normal part of aging. Delirium is an abrupt change in the brain that causes mental confusion and emotional disruption and can be traced to one or more contributing factors including chronic illness, metabolic imbalance, medication, infection, surgery, or alcohol or drug withdrawal. Healthcare providers can perform tests to help diagnose cognition problems, treat underlying causes and help to manage or slow the progression of disease.
