Alcohol Disorder-Related Hospitalization Rate

This indicator shows the number of hospitalizations with an alcohol related ICD-10 code as a principal or secondary diagnosis among residents aged 5 years older per 10,000 residents of the same age. (Based on CCS category 660.)

Why is this important?

Alcohol disorder-related hospitalizations are the leading substance-abuse related hospitalization accounting for about 30% of all mental or substance use disorder hospital stays.  People who have been hospitalized with alcohol problems have much higher rates of subsequent alcohol-related hospital admission and mortality than the general population.  In 2016, alcohol-related disorders were the principal diagnosis in over 401,000 inpatient stays in the U.S..
