Fall-Related ED Visit Rate, Adults 65+

County: Hawaii
Measurement Period: 2019
This indicator shows the number of emergency department visits for nonfatal injuries due to falls among people aged 65 years and older per 100,000 people of the same age.

Why is this important?

Falls are the leading cause of injury among adults aged 65 and older. About 3 million older people are treated for fall-related injuries in emergency departments each year, with more than 800,000 of these resulting in hospital admissions. Falls can result in moderate to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures, or head traumas, which can make independent living difficult.  Even people who do not experience significant injury after a fall may develop a fear of falling, leading to decreased physical activity and loss of physical fitness. Older adults are more likely to fall if they have balance problems, poor vision, or dementia, or if they take several medications. Physical activity programs and home safety interventions may help prevent falls in older adults.
