This indicator shows the percentage of households with at least one person who received medical services in a hospital emergency room in the past 3 years.

Why is this important?

Oftentimes, emergencies can easily be detected but it is not always the case. A person should consider going to the emergency room if he or she experiences the following: wheezing, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, chest pain, displaced or open wound fractures, fainting or dizziness, sudden numbness or weakness, bleeding that cannot be stopped, abdominal pain, fever with convulsions or any fever in children under 3 months, confusion or changes in mental status, coughing or vomiting blood, severe headache or head injury, blood in the urine, or bloody diarrhea, and sudden inability to speak, see, walk or move. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA) is a federal law that requires anyone coming to an emergency department to be stabilized and treated, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.
