This indicator shows the percent of adults who have smoked at least 100 cigarettes in their life and who report smoking some days or every day.

Why is this important?

Over 18% of US adults smoke cigarettes. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death and disease in the US. In Hawaii, tobacco use claims 1,400 deaths each year and $526 million in annual healthcare costs. Promoting tobacco cessation, health system changes, and social and environment changes will lead to reduced tobacco-related disease, death, and healthcare costs.
