This indicator shows the percent of adults who smoke cigarettes who stopped smoking for one day or longer in the past 12 months because they were trying to quit smoking.

Why is this important?

Although quitting smoking is often difficult and may require multiple attempts, there are many health benefits of successful cessation. People who stop smoking at an early age greatly reduce their risk for disease and premature death. Some benefits include lowering risk for lung and other types of cancer and reducing risk for coronary heart disease and stroke. There are several effective treatments and medications that can increase the chances of successful cessation including: counseling, behavioral cessation therapies, nicotine replacement productions, and other non-nicotine medications.
