This indicator shows the percentage of adults aged 18 to 24 years who have been tested for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in the past 2 years.

Why is this important?

Approximately one in five people with HIV in the United States does not know they are infected. It is important to know your HIV status for prevention of further spread and also because early diagnosis greatly improves health outcomes. Advances in HIV treatments have led to a slowed progression from HIV to AIDS, but medication should be started early in the course of the disease. HIV testing should be a routine part of health care for adolescents and adults. Although more testing will likely increase the number of new diagnoses at first, this is an important step toward preventing disease spread and minimizing negative health outcomes among those who are infected.
