Adults Exposed to Secondhand Smoke

State: Hawaii
Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the percent of adults who do not use tobacco products but were exposed to secondhand smoke at home or in a car in the past 7 days.

Why is this important?

There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Secondhand smoke causes heart disease and lung cancer in adults and a number of health problems in infants and children, including severe asthma attacks, respiratory infections, ear infections, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Although a growing number of laws ban smoking in workplaces and public areas, exposure to secondhand smoke remains high. Eliminating smoking in indoor spaces fully protects nonsmokers from secondhand smoke exposure and has been shown to improve air quality and reduce smoking among adults and youth.
