4th Grade Reading Skills

Measurement Period: 2022
This indicator shows the percent of students in 4th grade whose reading skills are at or above the proficient achievement level for their grade.

Why is this important?

Children with poor reading skills are more likely to struggle in school and take part in risky behaviors as adolescents. There are significant disparities in reading skills among 4th graders by race/ethnicity, school type, and eligibility for the National School Lunch Program. Reading skills are crucial component of health literacy later in life. This indicator monitors the ability of educational system to give children the knowledge and skills necessary to be productive members of society. This is a Healthy People 2030 Leading Health Indicator.
