Schools Requiring Education on Violence Prevention

Measurement Period: 2016
This indicator shows the percentage of public schools grades 6 to 12 that require students to take at least one health education course to increase student knowledge on violence prevention.

Why is this important?

Schools provide an opportunity to spread health education outside of traditional health care settings.  Additionally, information can be tailored to have the greatest impact on the target population.  Education on violence prevention is important because the rate of homicides and violence-related injuries remains high among youth in the United States.  Homicide is the second leading cause of death in young persons aged 10 to 24 years, and violence-related injuries result in over 656,000 emergency department visits each year.  Among students in grades 9-12, over 32% reported being in a physical fight in the previous year.  Violence can also result in emotional and psychological harm, some of which may persist for the lifetime.  School-based education is one method by which violence can be prevented before it starts.
