Indoor Worksites that Prohibit Smoking

Measurement Period: 2010-2011
This indicator shows the percentage of the employed population aged 18 years and over who work indoors and are covered by indoor worksite policies that prohibit smoking.

Why is this important?

The workplace is a major source of secondhand smoke exposure for adults. This has been linked to an increased risk in heart disease and lung cancer in nonsmokers. Although there are a growing number of laws banning smoking in public and private workplaces, secondhand smoke exposure remains high, especially among certain professions, including blue collar and service employees. Smoke-free workplace policies are an effective way to eliminate secondhand smoke exposure in these settings. Furthermore, restrictions on smoking in the workplace have shown to reduce smoking among the employees.
