Funding for Safe Routes to School

Measurement Period: 2018
This indicator shows the amount of money the state allocates to Safe Routes to School.

Why is this important?

Safe Routes to School (SRTS) programs are sustained efforts by parents, schools, community leaders and local, state, and federal governments to improve the health and well-being of children by enabling and encouraging them to walk and bicycle to school.  Providing students with a safe means to walk or bicycle to school will have a positive effect on traffic congestion around schools, air quality, and pedestrian and bicycle safety.  Additionally, children who lead sedentary lives are at an increased risk for a a variety of health problems including obestity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.  Walking or bicycling to school provides an opportunity for physical activity.
