Farmers Markets that Accept SNAP EBT Transactions

Measurement Period: 2016
This indicator shows the percentage of farmer's markets that accept SNAP EBT transactions.

Why is this important?

Fruit and vegetable consumption is low among teens and adults in Hawaii. Only 14.4% of adults and 9.0% of youth eat 2 or more servings of fruit, and 3 or more servings of vegetables each day.  Access to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables in Hawaii is limited by the increased costs associated with shipping; for example, Honolulu MSA has a 38% higher annual average food expenditure than the national average, higher than any MSA surveyed by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.  There is an association between availability of healthy foods and beverages and better nutrition. The CDC recommends incentivizing healthier food and beverage choices to underserved and low-income populations, and increasing mechanisms to purchase food directly from farms.
