Treatment Completion Among Tuberculosis Patients

Measurement Period: 2012
This indicator shows the percentage of people with confirmed tuberculosis who completed curative therapy within 12 months of diagnosis.

Why is this important?

Treating tuberculosis (TB) disease and ensuring treatment completion benefits both the person who has TB and the community.  It helps the patient because it prevents disability and death and restores health.  It benefits the community because it prevents the further transmission of TB.  Many TB bacteria are still susceptible to anti-TB drugs, making treatment a viable option for people with TB disease.  Although the regimen for taking the anti-TB medication is long, it is very important that patients finish the full course of drugs.  If the medication is stopped too soon, some bacteria may remain in the body and begin replicating to cause another round of sickness.  Even worse, the remaining bacteria may have developed resistance to the anti-TB drugs, making the disease harder and more expensive to treat.  Drug-resistant TB is an increasing threat across the globe.
