Infant Deaths Due to All Birth Defects

State: Hawaii
Measurement Period: 2020-2022
This indicator shows the number of deaths within the first year of life due to birth defects (ICD-10 codes Q00-Q99) per 1,000 live births.

Why is this important?

About 1 in every 33 babies is born with a birth defect. Birth defects can affect almost any part of the body and vary from mild to severe.  Although many can be managed into adulthood, birth defects are the number 1 cause of death among infants, accounting for 1 in 5 infant deaths.  Not all birth defects can be prevented. But a woman can take steps to increase her own chance of having a baby with the best health possible.  Abstaining from drugs, alcohol, and tobacco as well as receiving early and adequate prenatal care can decrease the chance of a birth defect.
