Adults with Diabetes and A1c Value Greater than 9

Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the percentage of adults aged 18 years and older with doctor diagnosed diabetes and a hemoglobin A1c value greater than 9%.

Why is this important?

Controlling blood glucose (blood sugar) levels is an important method to delay diabetic outcomes, such as eye disease, kidney disease, and nerve damage.  Tracking blood glucose levels helps diabetics understand how food, physical activity, and diabetes medications affect their glucose levels.  One method for examining blood glucose is to measure a person's hemoglobin A1c level (HbA1c, or just A1c).  This value reflects average blood glucose control for the past 2 to 3 months.  For diabetics, the goal is to keep their hemoglobin A1c level less than 7%.  A1c levels above 9% indicate poor blood glucose control and identify individuals who may be at the highest risk.
