Adolescents who Consider School Work to Be Important

Measurement Period: 2015-2018
This indicator shows the percentage of adolescents aged 12-17 years who always consider their school work to be meaningful and important.

Why is this important?

During adolescence, patterns of behavior are established that affect both current and future health and well-being.  Protective factors can help guide adolescents in making healthy and smart decisions.  One protective factor is school connectedness, the belief by the student that adults in the school care about their learning and that the work they are doing is important.  When students feel connected to school, they are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors and to succeed academically.  They tend to receive higher grades and stay in school longer.  Additionally, connection to their school can decrease the likelihood of adolescents engaging in unhealthy behavior, including substance use and violence.
