Schools Requiring Education on Pregnancy, HIV, and STD Prevention

Measurement Period: 2014
This indicator shows the percentage of public schools grades 9 to 12 that require health education on unintended pregnancies, HIV/AIDS, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) infection.

Why is this important?

Schools provide an opportunity to spread health education outside of traditional health care settings.  Additionally, information can be tailored to have the greatest impact on the target population.  Education on safe sexual behavior is important because many young people engage in risky behaviors that can increase the likelihood for negative health outcomes such as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).  In 2011, almost 40% of all U.S. high school students reported they did not use a condom the last time they had sex.  Nearly half of all new STD cases each year are among people aged 15-24 years.  Safe sexual practices can also reduce the likelihood of an unwanted pregnancy.  It is essential for schools to help young people adopt lifelong attitudes and behaviors that support their health and well-being.
