Schools Requiring Education on Suicide Prevention

Measurement Period: 2016
This indicator shows the percentage of public schools grades 6 to 12 that require students to take at least one health education course to increase student knowledge on suicide prevention.

Why is this important?

Schools provide an opportunity to spread health education outside of traditional health care settings.  Additionally, information can be tailored to have the greatest impact on the target population.  Education on suicide prevention is important because it is a major, preventable public health problem.  Suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth aged 10 to 24 years.  Suicide attempts far outnumber suicide deaths; over 12% of students in grades 9-12 in Hawaii reported having attempted suicide in the previous year.  Fortunately, successful prevention strategies do exist, and schools are a perfect environment for suicide prevention education.
