Schools Prohibiting Harassment Based on Sexual Orientation

Measurement Period: 2016
This indicator shows the percentage of public middle and high schools that prohibit harassment based on a student's sexual orientation or gender identity.

Why is this important?

Surveys have shown that many lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth experience a higher rate of verbal and physical harassment at school than their heterosexual counterparts.  Exposure to this type of violence and discrimination has many negative consequences.  Depression and suicidal thoughts and behaviors may increase, and students may turn to drugs and alcohol as a coping mechanism.  Additionally, LGBT students who felt unsafe or uncomfortable at school were more likely to miss days at school, compromising their education.   Schools can help by taking a strong stance against harassment of LGBT youth and providing a safe and supportive environment for all students.
