Safe Beaches for Swimming

County: Honolulu
Measurement Period: 2016
Percentage of days that beaches are open and safe for swimming. Reporting is done for those beaches, coastal and Great Lakes beaches, monitored through the beach season. Total available beach days are the sum of the length of each state/territory's beach season multiplied by the number of beaches in the state/territory. Notification actions are reported as the number of days under advisory or closed.

Why is this important?

Swimming and other water-related activities are excellent ways to get the physical activity needed for a healthy life. However, natural water sources can be contaminated with high levels of disease-causing microorganisms or other forms of pollution, including sewage and chemical run-off. Swimming in these conditions may result in illness, especially in children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Monitoring beach water quality is essential for maintaining a safe and healthy environment.
