Gonorrhea Among Females

Measurement Period: 2019
This indicator shows the number of newly reported cases of gonorrhea among females in the past 12 months per 100,000 females.

Why is this important?

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, mouth, throat, eyes, and anus. It is a very common infectious disease, with an estimated 700,000 new cases each year in the US.  Untreated, gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems. In women, gonorrhea is a common cause of pelvic inflammatory disease, which can result in infertility. In the United States, the highest reported rates of infection are among sexually active teenagers, young adults, and African Americans.
