Chlamydia Among Females

Measurement Period: 2019
This indicator shows the number of females testing positive for Chlamydia in the past 12 months per 100,000 females.

Why is this important?

Chlamydia, caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis, is the most frequently reported sexually transmitted disease in the United States.  It can be transmitted through vaginal, anal, or oral sex, and can also be passed from a mother to her baby during birth.  Although symptoms of Chlamydia are usually mild or absent, serious complications that cause irreversible damage, including infertility, can occur "silently" before a woman ever recognizes a problem. Under-reporting of Chlamydia is substantial because most people with the disease are not aware of their infections and do not seek testing.  The CDC recommends that sexually active females aged 25 years and under should be tested for Chlamydia every year.  Once detected, the infection is easy to treat.
